The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant William W. Haines (ASN: 6930942), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1945. Sergeant Haines, as leader of a self-propelled 105-mm. howitzer crew, exhibited outstanding courage while supporting an infantry company during an attack against strong enemy positions. The terrain was covered with paddies, and the Japanese were intrenched behind numerous flood dikes. To provide the best possible support for the infantry, Sergeant Haines brought his fun forward to the front of the leading elements. He himself then advanced beyond the front, exploring potential firing sites and seeking routes of approach. He was constantly exposed to hostile rifle and machine gun fire which spattered the mud about him. Sergeant Haines’ howitzer destroyed many enemy positions during the attack, and through his skillful leadership and courage our advancing infantry were able to attain their objective in the shortest possible time and with minimum casualties. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
