Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 170 (July 2, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Denzel (Denzil) T. Haines (ASN: 13050116), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 21 April 1945, when his platoon met heavy hostile fire during an assault which was of crucial importance to his battalion’s advance against the enemy stronghold of Baguio, Sergeant Haines reorganized the assaulting elements under intense enemy machine gun fire. Then leading the attack, he continued to point out the enemy targets to his men, refusing to take cover from the enemy’s fire. When the platoon’s operations were in danger of being halted by machine gun fire from the left flank, Sergeant Haines immediately moved out to locate the hostile machine gun. Advancing to within ten yards of the Japanese position, he boldly rose to his feet and hurled a grenade into the gun emplacement. The enemy opened fire almost simultaneously, killing Sergeant Haines with the initial burst. However, the grenade exploded, killing both enemy gunners and neutralizing the automatic weapon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
