Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 110 (May 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Eugene J. Haar (ASN: 36900392), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. During an attack on an enemy-held building, two members of Private Haar’s company were wounded by enemy rifle fire while passing along a corridor. This passageway was fully exposed to enemy riflemen in an adjoining building, and the Japanese fired at the least movement in the corridor. Private Haar immediately volunteered to assist his injured comrades. He ran down the corridor, and, lying flat on his stomach in order to present as small a target as possible, administered first aid to the two casualties. Then, although the enemy fired shot after shot into the passageway in an attempt to prevent the rescue, Private Haar dragged one of the wounded to a safe position, and returned through enemy fire to successfully rescue the second man. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
