The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade James S. Guthrie (ASN: 35767964), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. Technician Fifth Grade Guthrie, a Medical Aidman with an infantry company during the assault on the Paco Railroad Station, volunteered to go to the aid of two wounded men who were lying in the line of fire of an enemy machine gun. He crawled one hundred yards over the exposed area, reached the casualties, gave them first aid and assisted in evacuating them to the rear. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Guthrie, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
