The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Charles E. Guenin (ASN: 20516179), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. When the truck of which he was in charge ran into a heavily fortified enemy road block at Orioung Pass on 13 June 1945, Sergeant Guenin, although seriously wounded, organized a successful defense which prevented the Japanese from closing in. He continued to fire his weapon until again painfully wounded. While in a semi-conscious state from loss of blood and personally unable to move, he directed the withdrawal and evacuation of the wounded. Throughout the entire action Sergeant Guenin’s courageous conduct and inspired leadership were instrumental in preventing greater loss of life to his men. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
