The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Owen S. Griffith (ASN: 36553607), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 1 and 2 February 1945. Private Griffith, a company aid man, repeatedly braved intense enemy rifle and machine gun fire to go to the assistance of wounded comrades. On one occasion he treated four seriously wounded men during an advance up a bare hillside. Another time he rescued two helplessly wounded men from exposed positions on top of a hill. His brave actions saved the lives of several men and were an inspiration to his comrades. Private Griffith was fatally wounded several days later during the fighting in Manila. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
