The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harold E. Gorman (ASN: 90411091), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February 1945. After crossing a chest-deep stream under heavy enemy mortar and machine gun fire, Captain Gorman, a Battalion S-3, observed that his Operations Sergeant had been wounded and was lying in an exposed position on the river bank. He immediately moved back under the intense fire to pull him to cover. Just as he reached the wounded soldier, Captain Gorman was wounded, but despite the heavy fire and the pain from his own wounds, he dragged the sergeant to shelter. His heroic action saved the wounded man’s life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
