Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 133 (May 27, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Carl Garland (ASN: 13157322), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 27 January 1945. When the advance of his company was halted by entrenched enemy troops hidden along a trail, Sergeant Garland crawled forward to within ten yards of the enemy positions. Then, in order to obtain the best possible target, he stood up in full view of the enemy, throwing hand grenades and firing his rifle at the Japanese. Sergeant Garland’s heroic action completely surprised the enemy, and enabled his platoon to rush forward and annihilate the enemy force.
