The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Robert J. Gagyi (ASN: 20515906), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 136th Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January 1945. Technician Fifth Grade Gagyi was on duty at an artillery battalion command post which was subjected to intense enemy artillery fire. He observed a comrade fall, severely wounded, and, since the artillery bursts prevented medical aid from being taken to the casualty, Technician Fifth Grade Gagyi rushed forward, exposed to hostile fire, applied a tourniquet to the wounded man and removed him to the safety of an entrenched position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Gagyi, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
