The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private John V. Frenchak (ASN: 36760984), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 13 February 1945. Private Frenchak, a Rocket Launcher Operator, displayed outstanding heroism when his platoon’s advance along Herran Avenue in Manila was temporarily halted by intense machine gun and rifle fire emanating from a strongly-fortified enemy pillbox. He valiantly crawled to a low wall directly across the street from the hostile position, and while fully exposed to hostile fire, launched two rockets which silenced the automatic weapon. Dashing across the street, still subject to intense rifle fire, he then hurled three hand grenades into the fortification, killing seven Japanese soldiers and destroying the machine gun. Private Frenchak’s courageous action enabled his platoon to continue its advance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Frenchak, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
