Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 109 (May 9, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Carl K. Frantzve (ASN: 0-1114484), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Engineer Combat Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. First Lieutenant Frantzve led a four-man patrol whose mission was to reconnoiter several streets for the purpose of locating enemy mine fields. As the group turned a corner into one of the streets, it was met by heavy enemy fire. Cognizant of their dangerous position, First Lieutenant Frantzve ordered his men to take cover. However, realizing the importance of his mission, he continued on the reconnaissance alone. After proceeding for a short distance, a fire fight broke out around him between our troops and the Japanese. Disregarding his perilous position, he continued checking for mines until within thirty yards of the enemy positions, where he finally was forced to seek cover in a nearby foxhole. Then he joined in the fight until he was able to safely withdraw. Through his courageous devotion to duty and intrepidity under hazardous conditions, he secured information which assisted materially in the tactical planning for the reduction of the enemy strongpoint and subsequent mine clearing operations. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Frantzve, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
