The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) William N. Hannah, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 18 April 1969 while serving as Commanding Officer of Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop B was conducting a routine reconnaissance mission in dense jungle near Dau Tieng when they were suddenly engaged by an estimated battalion sized North Vietnamese Army force. The hostile force fired small arms, automatic weapons and rocket propelled grenades from well concealed positions on the ground and in the trees. Despite the intense cross fire Lieutenant Hannah exposed himself to the hostile volleys to direct his men and call in airstrikes only fifty meters from the friendly positions. At the same time he organized the quick and efficient evacuation of seriously wounded troopers. When a series of antitank grenades slammed into the lead vehicle killing three and critically injuring several others, Lieutenant Hannah quickly obtained aid for the ben. Because of his calm leadership the Troop removed itself from the main kill zone and killed fifty seven enemy soldiers. First Lieutenant Hannah’s total disregard for his personal safety and deep concern for his men were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
