The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant William Eichler (ASN: 36160779), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February, 1945. While reconnoitering enemy positions, the squad led by Sergeant Eichler was halted and placed in a perilous position by intense hostile fire. Ordering his men to remain under cover, he deliberately exposed himself to the enemy and diverted their fire enabling his squad to reach a position of safety and complete its mission. Sergeant Eichler was fatally wounded while in his exposed position. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
