The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Norman F. Edlund (ASN: 32567982), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 April 1945. When the artillery battery to which he was attached as a Medical Aidman was shelled by enemy artillery, Corporal Edlund immediately left his sheltered position and moved a seriously wounded man to a small ditch which afforded cover only for the wounded man. Despite continuous hostile shell fire, Corporal Edlund remained with the injured man, continuing his administrations while exposed above the ground. Upon hearing a shell coming he would throw his body across that of the wounded man to shield him from further injuries. Although one Japanese shell exploded about a foot from the two men, seriously wounding Corporal; Edlund, his brave action prevented further injury to his patient. In spite of his wounds Corporal Edlund continued to advise in the emergency treatment of other wounded until the arrival of another aid man, and then refused evacuation until all casualties in his immediate vicinity had been cared for and removed.
