Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Steve Dobies (ASN: 3500986), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. In an attack on the heavily fortified Paco Railroad Station, Private First Class Dobies took command of a squad when his squad leader was killed. He then led his men through an entire action, exposing himself repeatedly to enemy fire. Later he led his squad, consisting of only seven men at this time, in an assault on a house adjacent to the station, destroyed the defending force, and captured a light machine gun. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Dobies, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
