The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Medical Corps) Mark W. Dick (ASN: 0-432216), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 February 1945. Major Dick, a Regimental Surgeon, courageously exposed himself to enemy machine gun and mortar fire in order to go to the aid of an officer who was seriously wounded during the street fighting in Manila. Leaving his sheltered position, Major Dick advanced along a fire-swept street where six Americans had been wounded previously and administered first aid to the casualty to was lying in a building. Just as he finished treating the officer, another man was wounded in the street and lay exposed to hostile fire. Major Dick immediately ran from the building, and with the help of another soldier carried the injured man to a position of safety. Then, in order to keep constant watch on the casualties, Major Dick accompanied the slow-moving litter bearers back over the same dangerous route. His quick and skillful actions were instrumental in saving the wounded men’s lives. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Dick, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
