The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Arnold W. Dean (ASN: 32778962), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 18 February 1945. When an enemy soldier hurled a hand grenade into a foxhole occupied by Private Dean and two other men, he immediately seized it, turned his back to his two comrades, and started to throw it out. Before the grenade left his hand it exploded and killed him. The quick thinking and fearless action of Private Dean saved the life of his two comrades at the sacrifice of his own life. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
