The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Gerald J. Day (ASN: 0-1794791), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 February 1945. During an intense enemy mortar and artillery barrage, Lieutenant Day voluntarily crossed an exposed area several times to aid the wounded. On one occasion, he seized a litter, raced to the side of a casualty, and helped carry him to safety while extremely heavy fire was falling. Throughout the shelling, which lasted approximately three hours, Lieutenant Day exhibited outstanding courage and devotion to duty. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
