The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Charles Edward Davis, Jr. (ASN: 35147220), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 4 May 1945. At Mount Pacawagan Sergeant Davis courageously crawled fifteen yards through heavy enemy machine gun, rifle, and mortar fire to drag a wounded radio operator back to a safe position for medical aid. He then crawled back through this same withering fire to recover the radio and re-establish communications, making it possible to procure badly needed supplies and ammunition. Sergeant Davis heroic action aided materially in the success of his company’s mission and saved the life of his comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
