The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Earl V. Daniels (ASN: 35141556), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 2 and 9 February 1945. As a quarter-ton litter-truck driver for an infantry battalion medical detachment, Private Daniels drove his vehicle through an enemy-held sector in order to reach casualties. Making the trip over this hazardous route seven different times under enemy fire, he was able to evacuate all of the wounded men. Eight bullet holes were later found in his quarter-ton vehicle. At a later date, Private Daniels braved a two-hour enemy mortar and artillery barrage in order to evacuate some wounded men on his litter-truck. While driving through the dangerous area on one of his many trips, Private Daniels was wounded and his vehicle disabled by an enemy shell which exploded only 15 feet from him. After receiving first aid treatment, he refused hospitalization and asked for another vehicle. He continued evacuating the many wounded under the most hazardous of circumstances, and was directly responsible for saving the lives of many of his comrades. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
