The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joe G. Cricklin (ASN: 38325705), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February, 1945. During its advance through the city streets Private Cricklin’s squad received intense enemy fire from the front and right flank. Upon reaching a stone fence the unit’s position became untenable, and the order was given to withdraw. While preparing to obey orders, one man was wounded in the head and lay helpless about fifteen yards from the fence. Private Cricklin immediately dashed forward, lifted the man in his arms, and carried him sixty yards to a position of safety, although hostile fire swept the area, and the weight of his burden made the running man a good enemy target. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
