The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Walter E. Craig (ASN: 350013978), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 12 February 1945. When the advance of his company was halted by intense hostile machine gun fire from an earthen emplacement, Sergeant Craig crept forward until within a few yards of the Japanese emplacement, Then, while covered by a three-man security team, he stood up, exposed himself to the enemy fire to take careful aim, and fired a rocket launcher into the enemy position, completely destroying it and killing the six enemy soldiers who were manning the gun. He continued to fire his rocket launcher at other enemy positions in the area until his supply of ammunition was exhausted. Sergeant Craig’s heroic action enabled his company to continue its advance and accomplish its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
