The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Emile J. Couray (Courreges) (ASN: 0-380600), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. During the campaign for Mount Pacawagan on 20 April 1945, Captain Couray accompanied a patrol which reconnoitered an area heavily defended by the enemy. While carrying out his mission he was seriously wounded in the leg by Japanese machine gun fire. He was carried back to his organization, but refused medical attention until he had conveyed to his battalion commander valuable information concerning hostile dispositions and the best routes of approach to the unit’s objective. Captain Couray’s accurate information proved invaluable to the battalion in an attack on the following day, when it successfully assaulted and captured the Japanese positions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
