The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Pedro C. Corona (ASN: 38457155), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 22 April 1945. When Private Corona’s platoon advanced to the top of a hill it met enemy machine gun fire from a position on the reverse slope which halted the forward movement. Finding it impossible to outflank the enemy position because the sides of the hill fell away so steeply, Private Corona volunteered to knock out the hostile emplacement. Taking five hand grenades he advanced to the top of the hill. He threw a grenade at the enemy gun and forced the Japanese soldiers to take cover. He then ran forward ten yards and threw another grenade, keeping the enemy under cover. Throwing a third grenade to cover his movement, Private Corona moved to a position overlooking the hostile position and dropped a grenade into the dugout, killing the crew of the gun and neutralizing the weapon. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
