Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 258 (August 17, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Herbert H. Corbin (ASN: 20503962), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. On 16 May 1945 in the Balete Pass Area, Sergeant Corbin, with a work party, was repairing a break in a communications line in an entirely exposed area between two hills. When a litter team carrying a wounded man approached to within ten yards of the party, an enemy machine gun suddenly opened fire, wounding all of the men in the litter party. Whenever anyone made a move, the Japanese would again open fire. Sergeant Corbin crawled to his test phone in an attempt to inform our troops of the situation, but as he reached for it, hostile bullets shattered the instrument. Finally, a rescue party approached to within 20 yards of the scene and moved behind a small knoll. Sergeant Corbin, acting as an observer, then called instructions to this group which had a radio, and mortar fire was placed on the enemy position, effectively silencing the fire. On many other occasions during the Balete Pass Campaign, Sergeant Corbin courageously exposed himself to the enemy in order to establish and maintain communications. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
