Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Walter E. Conner (ASN: 36360982), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January, 1945. Private Conner disregarded his own safety in courageously leaving a partially covered position to rescue a wounded comrade who was lying in an exposed area at the mercy of a Japanese machine gunner 100 yards away. Although fired at as he pulled the wounded man to safety, Private Conner escaped injury and was able to give his comrade immediate first aid which saved him from bleeding to death. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
