The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harlan F. Conley (ASN: 0-1324085), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 28 January 1945. When several men from his company were wounded by intense enemy fire and lay in an exposed position, Lieutenant Conley organized his platoon to give supporting fire, secured a half track vehicle to evacuate the casualties, and went to the rescue. As he led the group along a ditch, the Japanese opened fire, wounding more men, and knocking Lieutenant Conley unconscious. Reviving within a few minutes, he observed three wounded men in exposed positions. Despite the hostile fire, he crawled to their sides and pulled them to nearby positions of cover. Then, although the half track drew heavy hostile fire, Lieutenant Conley assisted in putting the wounded men in the vehicle and supervised their evacuation. After maneuvering his men back to the company perimeter, he remained alone in the area, trying to reach other wounded men, until ordered back by his company commander because of approaching darkness. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
