The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George J. Conaway, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. Just as Sergeant Conaway’s squad reached the hostile shore during an assault river crossing, the enemy opened fire and seriously wounded one man, who lay on the bank completely exposed to the heavy fire. The remainder of the squad took cover below the bank, but Sergeant Conaway immediately started crawling to the rescue. Just as he reached the casualty’s side, enemy machine guns opened fire and he was fatally wounded. Sergeant Conaway sacrificed his life in an attempt to save an injured comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
