The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Anthony J. Chwiedziewicz, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January 1945. Private Chwiedziewicz was a member of a four-man litter squad which supported an infantry battalion during an attack against an enemy-held hill. He made four trips across an area constantly exposed to hostile fire in order to help evacuate casualties. The steep hill made the task exceedingly difficult and exhausting. As the litter squad was preparing to evacuate a man on the fourth trip, another Soldier was seriously wounded by enemy automatic fire and lay on the topographical crest of the hill. Private Chwiedziewicz immediately grabbed his first aid equipment and courageously crawled to the crest of the hill to care for the injured man. Although hostile fire kicked up stones and dirt within ten yards of his location, Private Chwiedziewicz bravely administered first aid until severely wounded by the intense hostile fire. Private First Class Chwiedziewicz’s personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
