Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 162 (June 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Joseph F. Chuckro (ASN: 36360468), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 19 February 1945. When a fellow soldier was wounded by enemy machine gun fire, Private Chuckro went to his assistance through intense fire from Japanese rifles and machine guns and administered first aid. Then, as Private Chuckro re-crossed 45 yards of open terrain in an effort to procure a litter, he too was severely wounded. Although his position was exposed, and every step brought him intense pain as well as fire from enemy machine guns, Private Chuckro made his own way to safety, thereby precluding the risking of other men’s lives. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
