Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 296 (September 15, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edison P. Chiloquin (ASN: 39335941), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Service Company, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the Philippine Islands, on 25 April 1945. As first scout of the lead platoon in a combined Tank-Infantry attack at Baguio, Private First Class Chiloquin fearlessly preceded his platoon, relaying warnings of all enemy positions. When one of the tanks received a direct hit from a Japanese 90-mm. gun, putting it out of action, Private First Class Chiloquin , although painfully wounded int eh leg from the flying shell fragments, refused to return to the aid station and continued to lead the attack of his platoon, personally killing four of the enemy, one of whom was attempting to throw a demolition charge onto one of our tanks. Continuing the attack, one Chiloquin led his platoon against an enemy-held building at a road junction. Disregarding his personal safety, he advanced alone, scouted the entire building, and accounted for one more enemy dead. Completing this mission, he ran to the aid of several wounded comrades in a flimsy hut by the road, gave them first aid, and remained with them despite a fusillade of enemy fire. When medical help arrived, he refused treatment until the other wounded men had been taken care of and left the front lines only when so ordered by an officer. Private First Class Chiloquin’s exceptional courage, fortitude, and ability was an inspiration to his comrades and was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
