The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Allen B. Chapman (ASN: 0-1309590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 145th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. When the platoon of which he commanded attacked enemy positions at Mount Pacawagan on 23 April 1945, Lieutenant Chapman exhibited outstanding leadership ability and courage. He personally moved forward to reconnoiter a route of approach for his unit over exposed, bullet swept terrain, and then advanced the platoon to the assigned objective with minimum looses. Though without orders, he again moved forward of his newly won position in an attempt to gain a still more advantageous position from which to place flanking fire on the enemy positions. As he crawled forward he was fatally wounded by hostile machine gun fire. Lieutenant Chapman’s heroic actions and untiring efforts to accomplish his mission were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
