Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 122 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade James H. Carroll (ASN: 35251849), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, from 9 January through 26 February 1945. As a Medical Aid man attached to a reconnaissance unit, Corporal Carroll repeatedly exposed himself to severe enemy fire in order to treat wounded comrades. He accompanied his unit on hazardous reconnaissance missions which often took him 25 to 30 miles in advance of the most forward infantry elements. On one occasion when a friendly tank was damaged by an enemy land mine and almost surrounded by numerically superior Japanese, he voluntarily accompanied a group of rescuers who drove up to the tank in a half track. Then, although exposed to intense hostile fire he helped the crew into his vehicle and gave them medical aid. Another time, when a group of enemy penetrated his unit’s perimeter during a night attack, he ran a gauntlet of Japanese fire to rescue a civilian who fell wounded to the ground. Corporal Carroll dragged the man 75 yards to a position of safety, and treated him until daylight. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
