Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 59 (March 20, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Floyd D. Campbell (ASN: 13002267), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Field Artillery Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 11 February 1945. Technician Fourth Grade Floyd D. Campbell and Technician Fifth Grade Leonard C. Cooper, forward artillery observers for an infantry battalion, were directing our artillery fire form a building which was under shellfire. When one shell hit the roof of the building, Technician Fourth Grade Cooper was wounded by shell fragments and Technician Fifth Grade Campbell was blown out of the building. Technician Fourth Grade Campbell rushed back to their position and joined Technician Fifth Grade Cooper who refused to leave to obtain medical aid. Together they continued to maintain artillery support for our advancing infantry. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade Campbell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
