The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Albert A. Campbell (ASN: 35116372), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 5 February 1945. Sergeant Campbell volunteered to go through a blazing inferno of burning buildings in Manila in order to rescue three wounded comrades. Upon nearing the casualties, he found that an enemy machine gun emplacement was blocking his route. Sergeant Campbell deliberately stood up in full view of the enemy and threw a hand grenade which neutralized the hostile emplacement. Then he helped rescue the wounded soldiers making three separate trips over a route made perilous by the burning buildings and Japanese demolitions. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
