The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Norman B. Buhman (ASN: 39343892), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, during World War II. When a reconnaissance patrol reported an enemy bivouac area five miles south of Cordon on Highway #5 in the Cagayan Valley on 14 June 1945, two squads led by Sergeant Buhman and another squad leader were sent out to destroy the enemy in that area. Storming through thick underbrush against well-prepared positions, these two men led their squads into hand-to-hand combat with the enemy, personally killing nine Japanese between them. Twelve rifles, five machine guns and a large store of ammunition were taken. The courage, aggressiveness and leadership displayed by Sergeant Buhman was in the highest tradition of the military service.
