The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Robert C. Brown (ASN: 0-1794772), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 and 14 February 1945. When his battalion was temporarily halted by intense enemy fire, Captain Brown volunteered to set up an observation post and to direct mortar fire on the enemy positions. The outpost afforded little cover and several enemy hits caused casualties among the observation crew. However, Captain Brown stuck by his post, directing the mortar fire until the enemy were forced to withdraw. At a later date Captain Brown went to the assistance of a wounded officer, pulling him to safety from an exposed position under enemy rifle fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
