The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade William F. Bridgewater (ASN: 36170173), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January 1945. Technician Fifth Grade Bridgewater was attached to an infantry company as Medical aidman during an attack against several enemy-held hills. On two different occasions he courageously exposed himself t o intense enemy fire for more than an hour in order to aid the numerous casualties sustained by his unit during the action. The enemy-held positions on commanding ground and the rugged terrain offered little cover or concealment, but heedless of the fact that hostile fire was falling throughout the area, Technician Fifth Grade Bridgewater moved about fearlessly, rendering medical assistance to the casualties. His courageous actions saved the lives of several American soldiers, and were an inspiration to those who witnessed them. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Bridgewater, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
