The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Harold W. Brenneman (ASN: 13107280), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. On 21 April 1945, shortly after an infantry battalion had secured a strategically important hill overlooking the Irisan River Bridge, the enemy began a general counterattack in different sectors along the hill. When apprised of the situation, Sergeant Brenneman immediately dispatched a runner to bring up reinforcements, and deployed the men under his immediate command in the best defensive positions along the ridge. Sergeant Brenneman then assisted in the deployment of the reinforcements, and led his men over the ridge in a furious assault against the enemy. While leading the assault he was seriously wounded. His gallant leadership played an important role in the overwhelming defeat of the enemy attacking force, of which 35 were killed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
