Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1982 (August 11, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pone William W. Hadix, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 29 April 1969 while serving as a scout observer with Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop G was conducting an escort mission in the early evening hours when they were suddenly engaged by an estimated reinforced platoon of North Vietnamese regulars. In the opening moments of the battle, an antitank rocket slammed into one armored vehicle seriously wounding most of the crew. Private Hadix alertly noticed where the flash of the rocket grenades had originated. Realizing that the damaged armored vehicle was between him and the rocket team he dismounted his vehicle and armed only with his M16 and two fragmentation grenades he raced through the withering hail of enemy automatic weapons fire. He then assaulted the hostile position taking cover only once to arm the two grenades. When near enough to the hostile force, he tossed both grenades accurately and fired his weapon into the enemy position killing two rocket team members. Private First Class Hadix’s outstanding courage, devotion to duty and complete disregard for his personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
