The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private First Class Thomas E. Faircloth, Jr. (ASN: 34606768), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy near ****, France, 27 September 1944. When two trucks, one of which was loaded with ammunition, collided near ****, the ammunition-laden vehicle ignited and burned fiercely. Private Faircloth, driving his vehicle in the vicinity, ran to the scene and assisted to safety the occupants of the burning trick, extinguishing one soldier’s flaming clothes. After removing the injured man from the danger zone, Private Faircloth returned to the truck, and despite exploding ammunition, searched it for possible remaining personnel, after which he took the injured man to an ambulance. Then, on his own initiative, he again returned to the wreckage amid exploding ammunition to assure himself that all personnel had been removed. Private Faircloth’s courage, loyalty and his comrades-in-arms, and disregard for personal safety reflect credit upon his character as a soldier.
