Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 123 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade James M. Barrett (ASN: 35316667), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. During the street fighting in Manila, Sergeant Barrett, a company aid man, exposed himself to intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire in crawling 25 yards to administer first aid to two wounded men. He dragged one wounded man to cover, then returned and assisted the second man to safety. On another occasion Sergeant Barrett left his position of cover at great personal risk to again attend two wounded men. He removed the more seriously injured casualty to safety, then returned once again under enemy machine gun fire to assist the second man to a place of safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
