Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 97 (April 24, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rollie Arnold (ASN: 35015984), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Manila, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February, 1945. When a member of his company was wounded and left lying in an open field, Private Arnold crawled forward under enemy fire, removed the casualty’s equipment and administered first aid. Heavy hostile fire prevented the use of a litter, so Private Arnold procured a piece of metal roofing, placed his comrade on it, and dragged him to safety through a lane covered by machine gun and mortar fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
