The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) John P. Andrew (ASN: 0-1011470), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 775th Tank Battalion, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 24 April 1945. During an attack along a mountainous road, a tank from Captain Andrew’s company was damaged by hostile fire and was unable to maneuver to safety because of poor vision. Captain Andrew immediately left his observation post and ran to the tank, completely exposed to the enemy fire, and directed it in turning around by means of hand and arm signals. Although painfully wounded by shell fragments, Captain Andrew continued to direct the tank while being given first aid and the armored vehicle was successfully withdrawn. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
