Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 121 (May 19, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John D. Anderson (ASN: 33727969), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 31 January, 1945. Private Anderson, accompanied by an assistant gunner, exposed himself to intense enemy machine gun and rifle fire in order to place three rockets into a Japanese emplacement. His bold action silenced the hostile pillbox and greatly facilitated the continued advance of his company. Six dead Japanese, three heavy machine guns, three rifles, and an ample supply of ammunition were found in the destroyed emplacement. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
