Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 110 (May 10, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Titus L. Altman (ASN: 34356510), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against Japanese forces on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 30 January 1945. Private Altman courageously risked his life to save a wounded comrade who was lying in an exposed area and drawing fire from emplaced Japanese 200 yards away. Private Altman crawled to the wounded man’s side and proceeded to administer first aid although under intense hostile fire. While he was treating the wound, another enemy bullet struck the injured man’s arm. Calmly Private Altman treated the second wound and then dragged the injured man to a secure position, saving him from almost certain death. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
