Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 144 (June 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clyde S. Allen (ASN: 34176321), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 8 February 1945. When their company’s advance was halted by an intense enemy mortar barrage, Sergeant Allen and a comrade voluntarily reconnoitered the area to discover the hostile strength and disposition. They advanced under machine gun and rifle fire to a small building from which point they observed the Japanese mortar positions. Returning over the same perilous route to the rear, they secured a sound-power telephone and wire, and once again moved forward to a concrete drainage ledge that afforded only partial cover. Lying in a prone position they began to direct fire on the hostile gun positions. When enemy positions placed the observation post under cross fire, his comrade moved behind the cover of a small concrete foundation and engaged the Japanese with his rifle while Sergeant Allen continued to direct fire until the enemy positions were destroyed, enabling their company to successfully complete its mission. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
