The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Herbert E. Woodward (ASN: 20112618), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 11 June 1944 near ****, France, when his battalion was attacking a town, his platoon came under intense enemy artillery fire and mortar fire and sustained many casualties. Sergeant Woodward moved forward under enemy machine gun fire coming from a building. He threw a grenade into the building and when it failed to explode, he entered the building by a window and was seriously wounded in the leg. Nevertheless, disregarding his wounds he continued on his mission killing the enemy gunner and putting the machine gun out of action. His gallant actions were in keeping with the highest military traditions.
