The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Charles B. Woodson (ASN: 37143267), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 90th Infantry Division in Northern France. On 8 September 1944 in the vicinity of ****, France, elements of an enemy armored brigade attacked the **** Command Post. Corporal Woodson, who was stationed at the message center, fought gallantly, throwing grenades, firing his carbine and bringing up ammunition under point-blank fire from enemy tanks and infantry. Although wounded, he insisted upon returning to the fire fight after receiving first aid and was subsequently wounded by an enemy grenade which caused the loss of one and possibly both of his eyes. Corporal Woodson’s determination, gallantry and courage were an inspiration to the men of his organization and contributed materially to the successful defense of the command post.
