The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Carl R. Weinrich (ASN: 0-274091), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 343d Field Artillery Battalion, 90th Infantry Division in action on 9 October 1944 in the vicinity of Maizieros les Metz, France. During the battle for the town, Captain Weinrich established artillery observation posts in the attic of a high building. At risk of his life, he advanced through devastating fire of various calibers, supervising the operations of his forward party and reconnoitering for more strategically located positions from which to observe the enemy. Though painfully wounded by a sniper, he declined evacuation, remained at his post and continued to register accurate artillery fire upon the enemy until the mission was completed. His gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
